Admiral Fancy Pants, a two-year-old male Magellanic Penguin, will waddle on exhibit before the Aquarium of the Pacific opens on Wednesday, March 15. Members of the media are invited to salute the Admiral as he waddles on exhibit and meets the other penguins in the June Keyes Penguin Habitat.

The public will be able to view the Admiral’s debut on its live webcam and can visit when the Aquarium opens starting at 9:00 a.m. that day. The Penguin Cam is courtesy of explore.org, the philanthropic multimedia arm of the Annenberg Foundation.

Admiral Fancy Pants arrived at the Aquarium as part of a national conservation effort by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA). AZA administers a Species Survival Plan (SSP) for Magellanic Penguins that includes breeding efforts. It is hoped that the Admiral finds a mate in the June Keyes Penguin Habitat. As the Aquarium welcomes the Admiral, they said goodbye to Newsome the penguin, who went on to find a potential mate at another AZA-accredited home. As the Aquarium’s colony continues to grow, staff members anticipate more such sharing to occur in the future in support of SSP conservation efforts. Magellanic Penguins are a temperate species native to the coasts of Argentina and Chile in South America.
