Grey Reef Sharks to Officially Debut at the Aquarium
November 15, 2018
For the first time, the Aquarium of the Pacific is home to grey reef sharks. The public can now see this shark species in the 40-foot holding aquarium at the Aquarium’s Molina Animal Care Center. On November 15 members of the press are invited to meet the newest sharks in the Aquarium family. Experts will be available for interviews and will feed the new sharks at 10:00 a.m.
Grey reef sharks can grow to six to seven feet in length and are found in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. This species of shark is inquisitive and is known to approach divers, making them popular with recreational SCUBA divers. With the decline of its coral reef habitats, this species is easier to catch and is more susceptible to overfishing. “We hope guests are inspired when they see this beautiful and powerful shark species at the Aquarium and are empowered to help protect sharks after they learn about their importance,” said Daniel Muñoz, Aquarium of the Pacific shark expert and assistant curator.
