Aquarium Curates 20th Anniversary Lecture Series

The Aquarium has scheduled a mini-series of lectures celebrating its twentieth anniversary. These evening lectures give an inside look at the Aquarium’s history, development, and achievements since its opening in 1998.

A panel moderated by founding Aquarium of the Pacific Board Director Doug Otto and featuring former Long Beach Mayor Beverly O’Neill, former City Manager James Hankla, Queensway Bay Project Director Robert Paternoster, and Aquarium developer Dennis Biggs will share stories and photos on how the Aquarium went from a fleeting idea to an impressive reality. Twenty Years of Achievements in Animal Husbandry and Conservation

As part of the Aquarium’s 20th anniversary celebration, Aquarium of the Pacific Vice President of Animal Husbandry Dr. Sandy Trautwein will discuss the institution’s twenty years of work and achievements in the areas of animal husbandry and conservation. She will share industry firsts, including stories of the animal species that were bred for the first time at the Aquarium. She will also discuss the onsite and field conservation work the staff has conducted, including breeding endangered species, restoring coral reefs and other habitats, and educating the public about what they can do to become ocean stewards. Dr. Trautwein joined the Aquarium in 1997 and was part of the team that prepared the Aquarium’s exhibits for its grand opening. She holds a master’s of science degree in marine biology from the College of Charleston (South Carolina) with an emphasis in coral. She earned a Ph.D. in biology at the University of California, Los Angeles, in 2013.
Cost: $5 per person; free for Aquarium members, seniors age 62 and up, teachers, and students with valid ID and advance reservations. Lectures will also be streamed live on the Aquarium’s website at 7:00 p.m. Pacific.
