This summer Aquarium educator Katelyn Sullivan was selected as a 2017 AltaSea Nautilus Ambassador and sailed aboard the E/V Nautilus as part of an expedition off the California coast. She experienced life aboard a research vessel and saw firsthand how deep-sea exploration and research is conducted.

Ambassadors spent five days aboard E/V Nautilus from July 30 to August 5 for one leg of the six-month expedition. Educators stood watch alongside scientists and engineers and interacted with shore-based audiences via Nautilus Live, a web portal connecting expeditions in the field to future explorers on shore via telepresence technology at nautiluslive.org, including live audio commentary and question-and-answer sessions.

Sullivan can now share her experiences with students and colleagues in her work at the Aquarium, helping visitors connect with STEM subjects and inspire students to consider careers in science. She had the chance to connect with participants in the Aquarium’s summer day camp program via Nautilus Live.

The Nautilus Ambassador program is an Ocean Exploration Trust program supported by the Goldhirsh Foundation’s My LA2050 Grants Challenge. Ambassadors are chosen for their leadership in education and commitment to bringing unique science, technology, engineering, and mathematics educational experiences to their learners.
