Shirley Pomponi recorded this Aquacast at the Aquarium on September 24, 2013. Sponge researcher and ocean explorer Dr. Shirley Pomponi has made more than 300 dives in the Johnson-Sea-Link submersibles owned and operated by the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution at Florida Atlantic University, where Pomponi is a senior research professor.

Pomponi discussed her research on how sponges use chemicals to defend against predators, communicate with other sponges, reproduce, and even prevent infections. These same chemicals are being studied for their potential use in treating human disorders and diseases.
