Lecture date: October 2, 2014.

Max Coleman and his colleagues at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab have developed ways of detecting signs of microbial life from Earth’s ancient ecosystems. They want to apply these methods to explore for life on other planets and particularly in the deep ocean of Europa, a moon of Jupiter. In his lecture Coleman discusses how he developed these scientific approaches and how they are being tested by exploring terrestrial analogs, especially our own oceans.

Coleman is the director of the Center for Life Detection and leader of the Astrobiology Research Group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab at Caltech in Pasadena.
