Lecture date: June 25, 2015. John Gillis discussed how shores have become among the most vulnerable of all landscapes. He also offered methods to improve humans’ relationship with the shore, preserving nature and sustaining coastal cities.
Gillis is a professor emeritus of history at Rutgers University. His lastest book, The Human Shore: Seacoasts in History, traces the evolution of Homo sapiens from its origins on the shores of southern Africa to the current surge to the sea taking place around the world as human populations on coastlines increase.
