Shared among seven states and Mexico, the Colorado River is an important water supply for Southern California. The river basin, now experiencing long-term drought conditions, faces an expected future shortage as climate change increases water demands and lessens mountain runoff. On March 20, 2013, Jeanine Jones discussed the basin’s complex legal and institutional framework, together with efforts under way to mitigate the impacts of shortages, including innovative binational partnerships. She also provided background on basin hydrology and water management. Jones is the interstate resources manager for the California Department of Water Resources.
