Perceptions of the United States are complex and emotional, frequently contain internal contradictions, and often change quickly, according to author Barry A. Sanders. In his recent book American Avatar, Sanders examines the roots of people’s views of the United States and what can be done to alter them. He analyzes both pro-American and anti-American biases, explaining which criticisms should be heeded when crafting foreign policy and communicating national objectives. Sanders is an adjunct professor in the communications studies department at UCLA. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the Pacific Council on International Policy and sits on the board of the USC Center on Public Diplomacy at the Annenberg School. Sanders spoke at the Aquarium on July 26, 2012.
