Communities need to think about responding to the current and immanent threats we all face due to climate change. Reducing our emissions of heat-trapping gases will only help to reduce the future impacts from climate change. Some impacts are unavoidable now and we must begin to adapt and respond to these changes. Climate resilience means being able to respond to and recover from these impacts. Our featured speaker, Albert George, will discuss the need for our communities to have conversations about climate resilience.
The South Carolina Aquarium, located in the waterfront community of Charleston, South Carolina, has developed climate resilience programs to help residents learn how they can keep their families and communities safe. The aquarium partnered with South Carolina Educational Television and the Medical University of South Carolina to conduct a series of town hall meetings and create a documentary to address resilience. These programs are designed to involve local leaders and the public in the conversation about resilience to make the topic accessible and to include everyone in discussing solutions.
In this lecture Albert George, director of conservation at the South Carolina Aquarium, will use these efforts as an example in discussing how communities can develop proactive plans to promote resilience and mitigate risks in the face of climate change and sea level rise.
This speaking engagement will be streamed live via the web. It is free to view. Times posted are in Pacific Time. Please note that if you tune in early, you may see either a placeholder image or another scheduled guest speaker engagement.
