The Coming: Native-White Relations in the American West

David Osborne

David Osborne

Debut novelist David Osborne will discuss and sign copies of his book, The Coming, a fictionalized account of the life of Daytime Smoke, the real-life son of explorer William Clark and a Nez Perce woman. Though largely celebrated in American history books, the expedition of Lewis and Clark and their Corps of Discovery began a process that brought disease, war, and genocide to Native American tribes. Daytime Smoke lived through this era, from first contact to conquest.

In researching the book, Osborne hiked sections of the Lolo Trail, spent time with the Nez Perce, and studied with a shaman to better understand Native American spiritual life. Osborne is the author or co-author of five nonfiction books: Laboratories of Democracy; Reinventing Government; Banishing Bureaucracy; The Reinventor’s Fieldbook; and The Price of Government. He has written for the Atlantic, the New York Times Magazine, and Harper’s, among other publications. Osborne is currently a senior fellow at the Progressive Policy Institute, directing the Reinventing America’s Schools Project.

This lecture will be held in the Aquarium’s Premier Watershed Classroom.
