We have engaged the services of Dr. Reinhard Flick, coastal oceanographer, and Walter Crampton, professional coastal engineer, to provide their expertise and perspectives for this community workshop. Both have extensive experience in coastal issues in California and the Los Angeles region and bring important expertise to this workshop.

9:15 a.m. | Brief overview of sea level rise and coastal flooding, the Peninsula, Naples and Belmont Shore Dr. Reinhard (Ron) Flick, Coastal Oceanographer Walt Crampton, Principal Engineer, TerraCosta |
10:30 a.m. | Discussion of essential spacial measurements and flood modeling work necessary to determine how flooding, erosion, and damages are likely to manifest and progress in frequency, intensity, and duration over the next century, assuming plausible sea level rise scenarios. |
11:00 a.m. | Discussion of time scales and potential of engineering approaches to long-term strategies for adaptation and how engineering solutions, both hard and soft, might help residents and businesses adapt to sea level rises of 1, 2, and 3 feet. Facilitated by Jerry Schubel. |
11:30 a.m. | Discussion of “Who Pays?” There will be big losses to both private and public land owners and managers. Who takes “The Haircut”? What is the fair, reasonable, and legal balance between private and public cost sharing? Professors Wade Martin and/or Ingrid Martin will give a report on CSULB MBA students’ project on the economics of what could be lost. |
