What fish should I eat? Do my seafood choices make a difference? For decades, the dominant narrative for sustainable seafood has been tailored to consumers. It has been presented in the form of certifications and lists to guide consumers towards seafood choices that are better for the environment. More broadly, conflicting messages whether or not we should eat seafood at all has been put into question with campaigns about overfishing and factory farms that are destroying the ocean. At the same time, there is growing consensus among the scientific community that we need to rely more on the ocean to feed the growing population in the changing climate with less impact. In other words… we need to eat more seafood! We can eat more seafood and support healthy ocean ecosystems, but we have to rethink how we approach sustainable seafood.

Kimberly Thompson has more than a decade of experience running the Aquarium’s sustainable seafood program, Seafood for the Future. She will provide an in-depth look into the benefits and limitations of the dominant sustainable seafood narrative, and challenge the audience to consider new approaches for more productive outcomes.
