CANCELLEDDue to unforeseen circumstances, this lecture has been cancelled. We apologize for the inconvenience.

David McKinnie, acting engagement lead at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s office of Ocean Exploration and Research, and Jyotika Virmani, executive director of planet and environment at XPrize, will discuss the advances in technology that are heralding a new age of ocean exploration. Most of the world’s deep oceans are largely unexplored, and an estimated 1.5 million marine species have not yet been discovered. New technologies include sensors that are becoming smaller, less expensive, and more capable; advances in data synthesis and visualization that allow us to do science differently and to share results more effectively; and new and emerging communications technologies that allow both scientists and the public to participate in exploration expeditions.
