The Physics of Mudskippers and Other Land Locomotors

Daniel Goldman

Mudskipper

Daniel Goldman, professor of physics at the Georgia Institute of Technology, was the lead author of a study published recently that investigated how aquatic animals transitioned to dry land millions of years ago. The scientists used robotics and mudskippers to study how these animal climb ashore in various conditions. They theorize that tails helped provide stability and forward momentum for aquatic animals as they moved onto land. Goldman will discuss the findings of this study. In late 2016 the Aquarium opened a new mudskipper exhibit on Harbor Terrace.
