First Wednesdays with Guest Speaker Dr. Sukhatme, Robot Lounge, and Cocktail Hour
First Wednesdays with Guest Speaker Dr. Sukhatme, Robot Lounge, and Cocktail Hour
On October 6 Dr. Gaurav Sukhatme, director of the University of Southern California’s robotics laboratory, will present a talk on robots and the sea in the Aquarium’s Honda Pacific Visions Theater. Following his talk and audience Q&A, the Aquarium will host a Robot Lounge in the Pacific Visions Art Gallery and a cocktail hour with music in the Great Hall. The Robot Lounge will feature robots with artificial intelligence and humanoid robots from the Robotics Society of Southern California and Barboza Space Center.
Underwater robotics is undergoing a transformation. Recent advances in artificial intelligence and machine learning are enabling a new generation of underwater robots to make intelligent decisions by reasoning about their environment. In Dr. Sukhatme’s lab at USC, researchers are engaged in a long-term effort to develop persistent, autonomous underwater robotic systems. These robots can stay at sea for days at a time and can perform complex tasks such as navigation, water sampling, inspection, and many others. In this talk, Dr. Sukhatme will give an introduction on underwater robots and an overview of some of his lab’s recent work focusing on safe operations in regions of substantial ship traffic, biological sampling for water quality monitoring, and the inspection of underwater structures.
