The cost of petroleum has been at or below $50 a barrel since 2008. There is significant research around algae biofuels, but they impractical when petroleum is selling at or below $50 per barrel. Robert Pomeroy will discuss the ongoing research and outreach in algae biofuels and introduce our pivot to biopolymers. Pomeroy is a professor of chemistry and biochemistry at the University of California, San Diego, where he also mentors undergraduate students in algal crop protection. His lecture will focus on polyurethanes and his group’s proof of concept technology: an algae surfboard.
