Virtual Field Trips for Grades 1 & 2

From the wondrous world of invertebrates to sharks and whales, students will enjoy these fun and interactive programs guided by Aquarium educators.

Wigglie Squigglie

Jump into the slimy, bumpy, spiny, rough, and often squishy world of marine invertebrates.

There are more animals with no bones than their bony counterparts and many of these curious creatures live in the ocean. Join us as we take an in-depth look at some of these amazing invertebrates. Together, learners will examine animals like sea stars, octopus, or sea jellies to understand how these “wigglie squigglie” animals not only survive, but thrive in their ocean habitat.

    • Learners will be introduced to examples of ocean invertebrates
    • Learners will explore the adaptations of animals, like jellies, sea stars, or octopus, and how they use them to find food and protect themselves

Magnificent Marine Mammals

Seals, sea lions, sea otters and whales are all mammals, just like you and me!

In this program, learners will investigate what makes these mammals so well suited to spend their life in the ocean. As we dive into the world of marine mammals, learners will use images, videos, and biofacts to make observations, compare and contrast and explore the unique adaptations that these mammals use in their aquatic habitat.

    • Learners will explore the five characteristics that define a mammal
    • Learners will be introduced to the diversity of marine mammals found in the Eastern Pacific

Sharky’s Adventure

Sharks are cool! And the more you know about them, the more amazing they are. Did you know that sharks come in all shapes and sizes and some can be as big as a city bus?

Join Sharky as he goes on an adventure to learn what sharks eat, how they find their food and what their skin feels like in this exciting class. As Sharky explores the world of sharks, students will gain a better appreciation for these magnificent predators!

    • Learners will explore the various of sizes and shapes of sharks
    • Learners will compare models of shark and ray teeth to make observations and predictions about prey
    • Learners will use live webcam observations, media, and activities to make connections between shark adaptations and habitat

Aquarium Exploration

Learn about some of the most interesting animals in our collection while virtually touring our Tropical Pacific, Northern Pacific, and Southern California & Baja exhibits with live camera views.

Programs are tailored to be grade specific and include interactive media, games, and time to ask questions. General themes include an introduction to the different habitats of the Pacific Ocean, animal diversity, and adaptations.

    • Learners will compare and contrast living and nonliving elements of tropical and kelp forest habitats
    • Learners will ask questions and share observations about animals and their habitats using pictures, biofacts, and webcam footage
