Climate Change Projects

The League of Women Voters and the Aquarium of the Pacific are announcing a contest for Long Beach Unified School District students to get involved with climate change and help others learn more about what they can do to help reduce its impacts and adapt to its effects. Students within Long Beach are the voice of our community’s future, and climate change impacts will be felt most acutely by future generations. A cash award of $1,000 will be awarded to an individual or group of students for projects that contribute to climate change education, mitigation, or resilience. To be considered, students must submit a short video about their project. Please see submission details below.

Project Requirements:

1. Project submissions are due no later than April 30, 2019, via electronic application. Hard copy submissions are available upon request.

2. Project must be relevant or directly related to themes in Climate Change and may include but are not limited to…

   a. Action Projects: Projects that actively mitigate climate change or help to adapt to coming climate changes. b. Awareness projects: Projects that inform audiences about climate change causes and effects as well as those that inform audiences about necessary adaptation/resilience to climate change.

3. The work of submitted projects must be primarily student driven. Teachers, advisors, parents and outside experts may support projects where relevant support is needed, however project work must be intellectually developed and implemented by students.
4. Student projects must have a sponsor teacher. Sponsor teachers must submit applications on behalf of student project work and must serve as a primary point of contact.

5. Project work may be ongoing or completed.

   a. Completed work must include activities that took place within one calendar year of submission.
   b. Ongoing activities must be started at least 1 month prior to submission.

6. Projects may be submitted an individual or as a group.

   a. Group projects must assign a primary contact. The primary contact will be awarded the full amount to be distributed among group members.

Submission Details:

1. Fill out application form that includes Name, Contact info and School/Institutional affiliation of each student participant (google from).
2. Adult Sponsor application form including names: Contact information and relationship to students (google form).
3. (If project is in an ongoing phase) Pledge form that indicates clear intentions of carrying out the project to fruition.

4. 2-3 Minute short film must be uploaded to YouTube that includes the following:

   a. Student’s understanding of Climate Change and its effects within their community. b. Describes how the project or proposed project relates to themes associated with Climate Change. c. Communicates what inspired students to pursue this particular project. d. Illustrates clear action plan on how the project will be carried out/ or how project was carried out and its impacts on the community.

From 5/01 - 6/01, 2019 a panel of judges chosen by the Aquarium of the Pacific and League of Women Voters will pick 1 winner from the entries received in the submission period: 12/01/18 - 04/30/2019. The winner will be chosen based on the published scoring rubric. Scoring of submissions is confidential and will not be released to applicants. Winners will be notified no later than 6/07/2019. NO PURCHASE IS NECESSARY TO BE CONSIDERED. A PURCHASE DOES NOT IMPROVE YOUR CHANCES OF WINNING. All entries that do not meet requirements or are received after the deadline will be disqualified. Employees, volunteers, and board members of the Aquarium of the Pacific and their family/household members are not eligible. Prize is nontransferable and must be accepted as awarded. All entrants (or parent/guardian) give full rights to the Aquarium of the Pacific and the League of Women Voters to promote and publish their name and photo in conjunction with the contest. All entrants release the Aquarium of the Pacific and their affiliates, parents, subsidiaries, directors, officers, employees and agents, the City of Long Beach and all others associated with the development and execution of this contest, from any and all liability from injury, loss or damage of any kind, including death, and property, due in whole or in part, directly or indirectly, resulting from participation in this promotion or acceptance, possession, use or misuse of any prize. Void where prohibited by law. All federal, state, and local laws and regulations apply. The Aquarium has the right to change or terminate the contest without prior notice.

• The extent to which the project is primarily and clearly driven by student work
• The extent to which the project leverages existing information, resources
• The extent to which the project effectively and appropriately utilizes outside experts, advisors, parents and teachers
• The extent to which the scope and goals of the project are appropriate to the actions/activities taken
• Does the project have lasting impact or influence on audiences
• Does the project have a long term impact on climate mitigation/adaptation
