Lecture date: September 24, 2014. Lincoln Paine discusses his book, The Sea and Civilization: A Maritime History of the World. This book traces how people first came into contact with one another by ocean and river, and how goods, languages, religions, and entire cultures spread across the world’s waterways.

Paine is the author of Down East: A Maritime History of Maine and Ships of the World: An Historical Encyclopedia. He serves on the boards of the Maine Maritime Museum in Bath and of The Telling Room, a non-profit writing center for children and young adults in Portland, Maine.
