Charles Yarish discussed the bioextraction of inorganic nutrients from coastal waters using native seaweeds. His study, conducted on the East Coast in 2011, demonstrated this process. Results suggested that seaweed aquaculture can be a useful technique for nutrient bioextraction in urbanized coastal waters. This process would help remove inorganic nutrients introduced into the ecosystem by humans. These nutrients can cause toxic algal blooms. Yarish is a professor in the department of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Connecticut.
