Speakers: Reginald “Reggie” Harrison, Kevin Miller, Rick Wilson
Moderator: Jerry Schubel

The public is invited to a panel discussion on tsunami science and preparedness. Panelists will discuss such topics as what areas of Southern California are at risk for a tsunami, what individuals and business owners can do to prepare, and the science behind tsunamis.

Reggie Headshot
Reginald “Reggie” Harrison was appointed as the City of Long Beach’s first Director of the Department of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Communications in November 2014. The department is responsible for disaster preparedness, Homeland Security grant coordination, and the City’s Emergency Communications functions (9-1-1). His emergency management experience includes beta testing the earthquake early warning system; implementing Alert Long Beach, a mass notification system that includes a process to send emergency messages to hearing impaired residents; making text to 9-1-1 services available to the public; and establishing the annual Long Beach Tsunami Walk and Resource Fair.

Kevin Miller Headshot
Kevin Miller is the Tsunami Program lead for the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES). He represents California on the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program, serving as Co-Chair of the Mitigation and Education Subcommittee. He has two decades of experience working in emergency management for the State of California, with a background in geospatial applications responding to and preparing for natural and man-made disasters affecting our state. His emergency management experience spans all major events affecting California during this time. This work is critical in educating the public about the agency’s mission of protecting lives and property in California.

Rick Wilson headshot
Rick Wilson is a Senior Engineering Geologist with the California Geological Survey who has worked for over 26 years in the geologic and seismic hazard fields, much of it with the state Seismic Hazard Mapping Program. For the past ten years, Mr. Wilson has been the Science Coordinator for the State of California Tsunami Preparedness and Hazard Mitigation Program, a program headed by the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services. Mr. Wilson is also the state Science Representative on the Coordinating Committee of the National Tsunami Hazard Mitigation Program (NTHMP), a partnership between federal and state governmental agencies designed to reduce the impact of tsunamis through hazard assessment, warning guidance, and mitigation. At present, Mr. Wilson is spearheading work with other scientists and engineers on new maps and products to help communities, ports, and harbors perform advanced tsunami response, mitigation, and recovery planning; many of these new products are forming the basis of national guidance.

Moderated by Jerry Schubel, President/CEO of the Aquarium of the Pacific
